Casa Esperanza Homeless Center
$3000 for the People’s Institute
Casa Esperanza provides shelter, medical care, food and showers, counseling, substance abuse treatment, and job and housing assistance to homeless individuals. Each winter the People’s Institute offers life enrichment classes in yoga, drawing, photography, music, and conversational Spanish and English, helping to foster a sense of meaning, self-expression, and community.


César Chávez Charter School
$4000 to support the art program
César Chávez aims to develop bi-literate, bi-cultural students whose strong academic and cultural foundation prepare them to meaningfully participate in their families, their community and their world to create a more just and equitable society. Through the school’s art program, some of the city’s most economically disadvantaged children are able to experience the power of the imaginative process.

Court-Appointed Special Advocates (CASA)
$2500 for volunteer training and support
CASA trains and supervises community volunteers who advocate for children who have been removed from the custody of their parents or guardians by the court due to abuse, neglect or abandonment. CASA volunteers act as friends and mentors to the children in the dependency system and as the eyes and ears of the court in helping to determine the best interests of each child.

Life Chronicles
$5000 for general support
Life Chronicles produces video recordings of people who are terminally ill, who are in life crisis, and for those who wish to share their life stories for future generations. The trained student volunteers who make and edit the videotapes not only acquire valuable technical skills but also learn profound lessons about life and relationship.

New Beginnings Counseling Center
$3500 for the Life Skills Training Program
This nine-month curriculum, offered to low-income parents and children in Carpinteria and Santa Barbara, teaches effective communication, listening and sharing skills, nonviolent conflict resolution, and tools for understanding family violence, child abuse, proper nutrition, and substance abuse.

Santa Barbara Dance Institute
$4000 for program support
Modeled after Jacques D’Amboise’s National Dance Institute, Santa Barbara Dance Institute is an in-school arts education program that aims to help children develop discipline, a standard of excellence, and a belief in themselves that will carry over into all aspects of their lives. This school year classes are offered at Solvang Elementary School, Adams Elementary School, and César Chávez Charter School.

Spiritual Paths Foundation
$5000 for scholarship support
Spiritual Paths promotes peace, respect, and mutual understanding between peoples of diverse religious and spiritual traditions. The foundation offers interspiritual programs on themes such as mysticism, contemplation, meditation, love, compassion, relationships, service, wisdom, the body, nature, the arts, prayer, devotion, health, and the end of life. This grant provides scholarship support for two weekend retreats at La Casa de Maria.

Youth Media Project
$3000 for program support

The Youth Media Project trains and empowers young people to express themselves to the community on issues that matter to them. Mentors and guest lecturers teach students about photography, writing, journalism and ethics, and the youth use these skills to produce a quarterly newspaper, Shape of Voice, and an interactive website.
